Born in Vic-sur-Seille, Moselle, to a family of bakers, Georges de La Tour was one of the greatest French painters of the 17th century. The Musée départemental is located in the heart of the town. Boasting a highly coherent painting collection - spanning French painting from the 17th to the early 20th century - the Musée Départemental Georges de la Tour offers 960 m² of exhibition space, spread over 3 floors of around 130 m² each. 17th-century painting on the 1st floor, landscape and 18th-century painting on the 2nd floor and, under the glass roof, Romanticism and the period from the 19th to the early 20th century. The Vicois collections are housed in the basement, a reference to the foundations of Georges de la Tour's birthplace. The highlight of these collections is "St. John the Baptist in the Desert", recognized as a major work, which shows St. John the Baptist, a thin adolescent leaning on a wooden cross. The mid-body framing in a wide format allows comparison with Caravaggio's painting of the same theme.
