Journées du patrimoine - Découverte commentée de l'Église de Zetting

Entertainment / special events

7 km from Sarreguemines, nestled in a loop of the river Sarre, on a green hill, discover the architectural wealth of the Saint-Marcel church in Zetting. At first glance, the architecture is surprising. The round tower of the 11th century bell tower is a reminder of the building's Romanesque origins. The Romanesque nave, probably dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, was the original place of worship. After building the choir in 1434 in pure Gothic style, the Benedictines of Tholey Abbey transformed the nave between 1480 and 1490, bringing it up to date. A unique 14th century tombstone groups the figures brought by the monks of Tholey who administered the church. Restoration work has also uncovered delicate and ornate Renaissance frescoes. The stained glass windows, painted by different schools between the construction of the choir and the transformation of the nave, constitute the masterpiece of the Church of Zetting. The choir of the Church of Saint Marcel still has a set of stained glass windows made in the second quarter of the 15th century by a Rhineland workshop. These stained glass windows, exceptional in their workmanship and their geographical and stylistic isolation, invite you to discover them... Free visit.
